The origin of Shot Ice
Once upon a a time....
The 11-year-old boy's name was Frank Epperson! On a cold winter evening in 1905, Frank left a glass of water with dissolved powdered soda, along with a spoon, on the porch. The flavored water froze into ice overnight. The next morning, the eleven-year-old Frank tried to pull the spoon out of the glass, but he also pulled out the block of frozen water – and that's how the ice pop on a stick was born. He started selling frozen water to kids in the neighborhood.Frank became a real estate agent and didn't pursue the ice pop business further. When his real estate ventures weren't doing well, he dug out his ice pop recipe from the bottom drawer in 1923 and developed seven more flavors for his frozen water. He sold these as Popsicles in a California amusement park.
A year later, he patented his ice pop on a stick. Later, due to financial difficulties, he sold the patent to a large manufacturer. In the first three years, the company reportedly sold 60 million ice pops.
Of course, today we have ice pops in all sorts of colors and shapes, but the hit is Shot Ice. This modern version of the classic debuted on January 1, 2014. However, the founding father, Simon Schulze Sutthoff, introduced an adult version. Alcoholic water ice in 8 different flavors –
Cassis, Cherry, Lemon, Watermelon, Raspberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Passionfruit
! A classic from the early days... :-)
